Looks someone fat fingered it this morning. Like me, every cell phone in the state of Hawaii got this exact emergency message:

BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL

Followed by another one 15 minutes later to ignore that last message…that it had been an accident.

It sent everyone in the state into a fit of panic, scrambling for shelters and their cars and online for additional news. Cell phones were overloaded while the Hawaii Emergency Management’s website appeared to crash.

What happened?

I suspect this has something to do with the new emergency siren system they were testing back in November, perhaps this is part of that system with the mobile phone alert system.

These types of notification systems are usually disconnected from the internet so it’s unlikely the work of a hacker… but you never know. I’m sure we’ll be receiving further details of what happened in the coming hours.
